Chernobyl – Turning Point or Catalyst? Changing Practices, Structures and Perceptions in Environmental Policy and Politics (1970s-1990s)International Conference, 2 - 3 December 2016, Berlin
The event in Berlin put together for the first time Western and Eastern experiences and responses to Chernobyl, based on new archival findings. The 17 contributions enquire into the role of econationalism in Eastern Europe, and the contribution Chernobyl made to the fall of the Soviet Union, but also the varying responses in Western Europe. The West German experience - where Chernobyl had a major impact on environmentalism and energy policy - constituted by no means the "standard response" in Europe.
A conference jointly organised by HoNESt Researcher Jan-Henrik Meyer and the Heinrich-Böll-Foundation in Berlin tried shed light on short-term impacts and long-term changes in environmental politics, and the difference Chernobyl made.
Partners for this event were the Rachel Carson Center for Environment and Society, Munich, and the Center for Metropolitan Studies (TU Berlin).
